What the (heck) Neighbors Saw by Melissa Adelmen book review *no spoilers-ish*

I finished this book in 3, including the day I brought it home. It was very good and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

What would you do if you move to a nice neighborhood and your neighbors husband turns up dead by a river? Would you a): move, b) Stay, c) become friends with the widow and end up in a twist you never thought would be imaginable!?!

Well, if you picked C, then that’s what Alexis Crawford decides to do when she convinced her husband to move into this house–this dirty, abandoned and messed up house–that needed over a million dollars worth of repairs to even make it somewhat appropriate to live in. Alexis desperately wants to escape a life of emotional neglect by the hands of her mother and father, insecurity, pain and invisibility…but instead found murder, secrets, and even more murders.

Man, do I feel for Alexis. she feels inferior as a black person, so she jumps on any opportunity to elevate herself material-wise, in hopes to shed the skin of self-pity that seems to engulf her. She wants to fit in so badly, that this cost her eventually her husband, whom she’s on baby number 2 with. She wastes time daydreaming and lallygagging about the supposed life that these rich people had in this neighborhood, like Blair Bard, who looks great on the outside…but…let’s just say, her and her dead husband share a close bond. But poor Alexis…she never took the time to look at how their lives actually were outside of the fancy house. Desolate, empty and dangerous. Just like her house when she moved in.

But…to be honest, this book was good. I could not put it down. I read it while I was at work. I read it during my lunch break. I read it again and again for a few minutes afterwards, trying to wrap my head around the fact that I knew who the murderer was all along. AND THEY WERE STANDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY FACE!

This book gives me Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris vibes. I wrote a review on that a while ago, so feel free to check it out.

Melissa Adelman did a remarkable job writing this debut book of hers. I am so glad I didn’t borrow this book from the library, because I did in fact write, annotate, and make break it in as I carried it around everywhere. There are some stories that will stick with you forever, and this one is one of them! To pick up a copy of this book, click here!
